Grant Writer

Wilmington, DE | full time | Salary: $55,000 – $65,000

Scope of Duties

Under the direction of the Chief Operating Officer and/or Executive Director, the Grant Writer is crucial in the creating, planning, and implementation of ICHDE projects.

The Grant Writer is responsible for studying and understanding the history, objectives, programs, and financial needs of the organization.
Researching grant opportunities from government and non-government agencies.

Drafting graft proposals and supporting documents based on the funding requirements of the organization.

Critically reviewing assorted requests for proposals and making appropriate recommendations according to ICHDE goals.

Principal Functions

Study and understand the history, structure, objectives, programs, and financial needs of the organization.

Research grant opportunities from government and non-government agencies.

Draft grant proposals and supporting documents based on the funding needs and requirements of the organization

Identify areas for resource and program development and seeking staff, financial, and community support for their implementation.

Collaborate with the executive director to develop metrics and collect data to ensure that practices are implemented as planned and achieve the organization’s desired outcome.

Making recommendations for changes to program practices that are not receiving favorable outcomes.

Leading a fund development program that includes annual giving, major giving, foundation and government grants, corporate support, and special events.
Identifying, developing, writing, and obtaining government, public, and private funding for current and future initiatives of the organization.

Conducting market research studies and producing marketing materials and strategies to enhance the organization.

Planning marketing strategies, public relations policy, and working with development staff.

Collaborate with Marketing Assistant to ensure that publications, website, and communications include donor-focused content.

Work with ICHDE staff, volunteers, and the board of directors to ensure strong communications exist across all program areas.

Acting as the central location for all completed research and implementing an active database of resources.

Developing, managing, and effectively using a donor database, which maintains all pledge and payment records, funding information, and volunteer activities.
Maintain positive relationships with fund providers and other stakeholders.


Demonstrated knowledge of the state and federal grant systems.

Understanding of effective fundraising.

Education and Experience

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the above qualifications. The applicant must have a bachelor’s degree in a related field, with a master’s degree preferred. Along with three to five years of grant writing and leadership experience in a strategic development position.
